It's been a busy week.

I've been doing lots of things this week. Finishing and sending off a few parcels in a few swaps I have joined. Swapping for Scraps for instance. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to joining *that* one! I've also sent off my first parcel in the Secret Pal 14 swap.

Tuesday I spent with a friend, just hanging out, talking about knitting, drinking coffee and generally enjoying the nice weather. Wednesday we took her four smallest kids picking berries, and visited her eldest daughter and her horses. It was a really good day. I picked about a pound of cherries. Yum.

I've spent a lot of time in my little cottage in our garden. That's where I work. Spend most time spinning there and carding fiber. I love that little place. Sanna came over and tried spinning for the first time later that same day when we picked cherries. It was fun. Check her out here

Friday, I spent carding. It really is pretty much work involved in getting a fleece from fleece to spinable carding batts. Getting the grease out (washing) and the VG (picking the wool) and teasing it, before feeding it into the carder to make batts. It doesn't sound like much, but if you realize that picking vegetable matter out of a few ounces of alpaca wool takes several hours, you get the drift ...

But it kinda is worth the trouble ...

Wow - a whole week since I posted already!

Time flies when you're having fun. And I guess it's true. I have had mom here with me for the past month and a half, and it's been busy. This morning we drove her to the train and the house is really empty and quiet. I have mixed feelings about this. I love having her here and it's going to take a while to go back to normal, but at the same time, it's good to have some time to myself. Spinning, knitting and doing that stuff I love gets seriously put to the side when mom's here.

In town, I splurged on a whole bunch of Knitting Magazines. Finding such here where I live is pretty darn difficult, so when I found a shop that carries them today, I picked up pretty much one issue of each, even though they cost an arm and a leg. (About 15 USD each!!!) but boy I've enjoyed leafing through them this afternoon.

Tula (kitty cat) helps me read them :)

SP14 questionnaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I love sock yarns and lace. Not a big fan of scratchy wools and I seem to be allergic to either Yak or Camel since I sneezed like a madwoman after smelling a blend thereof.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have an old beautiful wooden box for my sock needles, and a pretty needle case for my straights. I would need something neat for my circulars though since they are a messy lot.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I've been knitting on and off for years, but I started seriously only in 2007. I have learned a lot the past two and a half years though and I think I'm an intermediate knitter. I learned from my paternal grandmother and in school many years ago.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

Not really, but I do have some info in my Ravelry profile on books I would love to own.

5. What's your favorite scent?
lemon, lily of the valley, lilac

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I do but am diabetic so I stick to chocolate when I eat candy.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

beading (making stitch markers, and ear rings mostly. one or two orifice hooks from time to time) dyeing, mostly with food colors though. I spin. Love to spin.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
Hard rock. and yes. MP3 is fine.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
I love blues and purples. Not a huge fan of strong yellows and oranges.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
Married no kids, lots of cats.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Not very often to be quite honest.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
socks, dish cloths, bags, small items.

13. What are you knitting right now?
A pair of socks and a tank.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yes.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I prefer either short straights or circulars. Don't like the longer straights. I love wooden needles (esp. ebony or rosewood) I always use the shorter sock needles too. (5-6 inches)

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

Yup. I have both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
A year maybe.

18. What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?
Christmas on both counts.

19. Is there anything that you collect?
Fiber, yarn, needles. Other than that I am trying to purge my home of too much stuff.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
The only magazine I subscribe to is a Swedish one. Yarns I'd love to try are casbah sock yarn and mini mochi. Also big fan of Handmaiden's yarns.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I'm always eager to learn new things, but don't know anything in particular that I'm interested in. I would love to recieve a comprehensive book about spinning on a wheel though.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yes. Size 40 European.

23. When is your birthday?
October 23

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?

kariola

Washing yarn

Summer has finally come BACK to Sweden and it's been a lovely few days. Mom and I've spent some time outside. These last couple of days I've spent washing, and drying a heap of yarn I found at the thrift store. It's lovely, lovely sheep's wool. About 9lbs worth (42 skeins á 3.5 oz each) of yarn and I didn't pay more than approximately 25 dollars for it. It's all in really good condition and will work beautifully for felting. I'm happy. I just washed it to make sure there are no bugs or other unpleasant surprises inside the skeins.

On a side note. I'm not a huge fan of Michael Jackson's but I was saddened to hear about his death. He's one of those people I think about from time to time and realize I really, really would not want to be famous, no matter how much money I'd make. May he find peace and happiness in the hereafter. I believe he didn't have much of that on his time here on earth.

Moebius knitting

I recieved a pattern for a moebius from a friend on Ravelry. It made me a little confused, so I looked online for more help and found this video by Cat Bordhi. I'm embedding it into my blog for easy access - and share with you a technique that seems pretty interesting :)

Tredje paketet i Hemlis 5

Knitting shawls, spinning yarn

I'm knitting a Swallowtail shawl at the moment, my first real lace project. So far it's going pretty well, but I am dreading the Lily of the Valley edging a bit. It's so pretty but looks much more complex than the rest of the shawl.
I also recieved some real sheep's wool in a swap recently and spun up my first hank of it. It's 100% sheep's wool, about 60 grams, 110-115 yards and about 14 wpi or therabouts...

.

Hemlispaket #2

Okay, I'm happy as a clam today! I got my second Secret Pal package from my "hemlis". This is what I recieved.

Yeah!

This is fun. I started spinning a couple of days ago. As you may or may not remember, my MIL brougth an old wheel with her last time they visited, and tried to teach me how to spin flax - it was a pain in the rear end .... Now, I recieved some lovely merino wool in a swap and a few days ago I decided to try it.

I nearly gave up. I swore long harangues of dirty words, I growled and sighed and whined. Hubby was in the next room and had a really hard time trying not to laugh at me. That didn't help.

The string that drives the bobbin fell off the wheel consantly. The arm that's attached to the pedals fell off (old wheel) and the bobbin wouldn't move ... suffice to say I was about ready to throw the wheel out the window.

And then, all of the sudden it started going rather smoothly - and here it is - tada! My very first handspun. About a bobbin's worth. I'd say worsted weight or even aran in singles so it's a bit thick, but alas, it's fairly even for a first ever try, no?

Pretty. Fun.

Long time no see ... Hemlis 5

I know I haven't been around, and this won't be any better, because it's just a questionnaire for a Swedish Swap I'm in ... Sorry folks. I'm on Ravelry a lot as kariola though. Friend me if you want.

1. Vilken sorts garn tycker du mest om? (Ull, akryl, bomull osv.)

11. Vad tycker du är roligast att sticka? Mössor? Sjalar?

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test...

Traditional, Vibrant, and Tasteful

8 Islamic, 7 Impressionist, 5 Ukiyo-e, -17 Cubist, -14 Abstract and -1 Renaissance!

Islamic art is developed from many sources: Roman, Early Christian, and Byzantine styles were taken over in early Islamic architecture; the architecture and decorative art of pre-Islamic Persia was of paramount significance; Central Asian styles were brought in with various nomadic incursions; and Chinese influences . Islamic art uses many geometical floral or vegetable designs in a repetitive pattern known as arabesque. It is used to symbolize the transcendent, indivisible and infinite nature of Allah.

People that like Islamic art tend to be more traditional people that appreciate keeping patterns that they learned and experienced from their past. It is not to say that they are not innovative personalities, they just do not like to let go of their roots. They like to put new ideas into details and make certain that they will work before sharing them with others. Failure is not something they like to think about because they are more interested in being successful and appreciated for their intelligence. These people can also be or like elaborate things in their life as long as they are tasteful. They tend to prefer geometric patterns and vibrant colors.

The worst day of my life ...

The absolute worst day of my life, so far, is over. The funeral is behind me. And despite the fact that it was the hardest thing I have ever done, the funeral service itself was so incredibly beautiful.

The minister was a wonderful young woman. She held a wonderful speech over dad, and the singer sang three songs that my father loved very much. "Tiggaren från Luossa", "Håll mitt hjärta" and "Jag väntar vid min mila." There were also a psalm called "Stad i ljus" that we all sang.

It was ... sad, horribly sad, but I managed not to cry myself sick and in some way it's a relief that it's behind us.

I miss dad. I'll miss him for a long time to come, but our farewell to him was as beautiful as it could have been.

Greetings from Dad?

Today, I've had a rather difficult day, missing dad. Mom and I were with my brother and his family, because their eldest son turned 28 yesterday, so we drank some wine. Thus we were late home and fell asleep even later. There was a lot of talk about dad and some crying and also happy memories.

This means that today I've been tired and more susceptible to the grief I guess. More vulnerable than other times. Or maybe it's just that some days the grief comes closer. Either way, I've been praying silently and out loud for a sign that dad is still with us, even though he's not here, y'know. People I've talked to who have lost near and dear ones have told me of experiences they've had that have told them that their loved ones are still around, even though we can't see them or talk to them (at least not while expecting an answer).

I was hoping that I would get some kind of tangible sign that dad is here. A bird who flies into the balcony, fearless, or ... I don't know ... *something*.

While wishing for this, I was knitting on a pair of socks and helping mom vacuum (not at the same time, mind you). But once we were done, I went into the bedroom.

A day or so ago, I'd been messing around with a ball of yarn that I'd dyed myself. I was planning on making a pair of socks, but decided against it because I kept tangling it up. Finally I gave up and tore off twoo lengths of yarn that were hopelessly knotted. I shoved them into the back of the shelf where I keep the yarn I brought with me to mom's (or that I bought while being here).

But there it was. One of those tangled little lengths of yarn was lying on the bed that I had just made not ten minutes earlier. I am absolutely *sure* that I hadn't put it there. So I asked mom if it had perhaps fallen off my shelf onto the floor and she'd picked it up and put it on the bed. She said no. She was sure she hadn't done it. We almost argued about it.

And yet, there it was, that little tangle of yarn that I had shoved into the back of the shelf. I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been on the floor. I could have pulled it out when getting yarn without noticing. No biggie.

But how did it get onto the bed? I have not touched it! I am absolutely certain.

And in my heart, I know it was a greeting from dad. So I sat on the bed, starting to untangle the little length of yarn. (perhaps 15 feet of it or so), and it practically fell into a yarn length of its own volition, that I could wind up without trouble. Surprised, I went to the shelf and picked out the other length of yarn too, which was a little longer, maybe 20 feet. The knots practically unmade themselves in that small length of yarn and I could wind that too, without trouble.
Those knots that I only a couple of days ago had completely given up on untangling.

I'm not big on believing in things like this. But what should I think about this? Really?

Out of time ...

A friend of mine says that when someone dies, she feels as though time stands still. In a way I agree, and in another, not at all. It's more like you exist on the side of normal life. As though your own world stops, but the world around you continues on like it always does. Unperturbed, unconcerned.

And here you are, so filled with sadness and all those "must do's" that come with someone dying. It's frankly frightening to realize how much needs to be done, fixed and dealt with after someone has passed away. And all those things fall on the people closest to the deceased. Calling banks, magazines, insurance companies. Dealing with funeral arrangements, tombstone, death certificates and all those practical details.

The world doesn't really care that all you want to do is sink into your own mind and not be bothered with all those minutiae of every day life, or especially the things involving a death.
